Background of the Study
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential in healthcare settings to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases and protect healthcare workers from occupational hazards. PPE includes gloves, masks, gowns, face shields, and other protective gear designed to minimize exposure to harmful biological agents (WHO, 2024). The proper use of PPE among nurses is crucial in ensuring their safety and that of their patients, particularly in high-risk environments such as hospitals (CDC, 2023).
Despite the availability of PPE, studies have shown gaps in its proper usage, ranging from incorrect donning and doffing techniques to non-compliance due to discomfort, lack of training, or inadequate supply (Smith et al., 2023). The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of PPE in infection control, emphasizing the need for adherence to standard precautions to reduce healthcare-associated infections (Jones & Ahmed, 2024).
At the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), nurses are at the forefront of patient care, making PPE compliance critical. However, factors such as workload, knowledge gaps, and institutional policies may influence the effectiveness of PPE usage. Evaluating the effectiveness of PPE usage among nurses at UMTH is essential in identifying strengths and areas for improvement to enhance occupational safety and patient care.
Statement of the Problem
Inadequate use of PPE among nurses has been linked to increased occupational exposure to infectious diseases, compromising both healthcare worker safety and patient outcomes (Ogunleye et al., 2023). Studies suggest that improper PPE usage results from a combination of factors, including limited knowledge, lack of adherence to protocols, and resource constraints (Taylor & Bello, 2024).
At UMTH, there is limited empirical data on the effectiveness of PPE usage among nurses. While PPE is provided, its correct and consistent use remains uncertain. Without a proper evaluation, gaps in compliance may persist, increasing the risk of nosocomial infections and occupational hazards. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of PPE usage among nurses at UMTH, focusing on compliance levels, influencing factors, and areas for intervention.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of compliance with PPE usage among nurses at UMTH.
2. To identify factors influencing PPE usage among nurses at UMTH.
3. To evaluate the effectiveness of training programs on PPE adherence among nurses.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of compliance with PPE usage among nurses at UMTH?
2. What factors influence the proper use of PPE among nurses?
3. How effective are training programs in improving PPE adherence among nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at UMTH demonstrate high compliance with PPE usage.
2. Institutional and individual factors significantly affect PPE adherence among nurses.
3. Training programs positively influence PPE compliance and correct usage.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working at UMTH, evaluating their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding PPE usage. Limitations may include self-reported biases, variations in PPE availability, and challenges in observing PPE adherence in real-time.
